What a Time to live in –

as far as can be seen.

Time flows through itself
spans voids that are not there
and threads its way throughout it all –
it’s only us who care

no way to measure from then to now
or to say what’s big or small

and how to know what’s down or up,
and whether moonlight comes - or goes
or why tea leaves scatter in a cup?

Now is a Time that we have made
(or was it something we were sold?)

we lived our lives accordingly
making sense as we grew old

took the Time to be ourselves
(despite what we were told)

now we have History to tell
as well
as those who fix the Times
with heavy stones
that sink down without trace

(is this the Time that really will
see the end of the human race?).

Ancient rhythms immutable
fixed foundations deep inside

great expansive oceans
and the regularity of tide.

We travelled round about the place
lit by our waxing Sun,
until we turned around again
and looked at where we’d come –

trails of debris everywhere
and tales of holes in Space –

pixel Earth flies alone
unique
blue bright –

nothing else in sight

(what’s that about our veils above
that strike the shooting stars with light?).

Weather warnings flash
across the world
in Time
to tell us where
and
who

We Are
again.

Time

and

Time Again.

Sometime soon,
sometime soon the Earth will move again.

Soon, so very soon
the light will simply fade
lost in dreams of darkness and the phantom ghost parade

Soon, sometime soon
the stars will light the way
across the sky to morning of another sparkling day.

Clouds will fill the heavens and down will flow the rain
in rivers of renewal that flood the city drains

Soon, sometime soon
the Earth will move again

The weather's in the news again.

Whatever the reason, the cause, the old proverbs are losing meaning, reliability. As old as the hills, as old as death and, if we ever had such a thing, we've lost a ghost of memory, an ancient imprint that all this has happened before.....

Keep the buses running, the trains and planes on time, the wine pouring across the tables of the not so rich and famous and just hope that it never happens here - and if it does just assume that it happens to someone else, somewhere else.

But there is no-one else, nowhere else.

It couldn't happen here. Could it?

Swirling winds and rushing waters. Summer sun in winter and another icy August.

It couldn't happen here. Could it?

It did Before....

Can't you remember......?

The times have come after all. Come but not changed. I think we really expected them to. Really did. A new beginning. Young and wise in an endless dawn......

Now it's the same age-old continuous shuffle, blindfold. Lemmings to the brink. Don't let us think, don't let us see. Turn the light off, and on, and off again.

Spare the old, and save the child. Shore up the defences, the oceans are too strong, too deep, too powerful. We are nothing, not even the grains of sand nor the sea-spray blown across the beach. Yesterday we were here, the day before we were not.

Tomorrow we live again,
the day after not.

On and off,
and off again.

No next time.
